WHAT'S NEW

Purpose:

in partnership with ECALA and Edmonton’s First Nation, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) community, our goal is to bring together members of the community who are passionate about working towards intentional change that supports the intergenerational growth and vitality of Indigenous adult learners (IAL).

Description and Responsibilities:

In accordance with the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) First Peoples Principles of Learning that promote mutual respect and reciprocity, the IWG will work in collaboration with ECALA funded Indigenous programs and members of the community to network and develop culturally supportive strategies and approaches that strengthen relationships while promoting equitable and inclusive participation of IAL in all aspects of society.

Responsibilities of the IWG:

• Expression of diverse FNMI perspectives to inform the work of the IWG
• Adhering to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls Action with special attention to calls: 7, 10, and 57
• Building relationships with the community and relevant stakeholders in order to communicate issues and concerns of IAL from an urban Indigenous perspective and ensuring they are meaningfully addressed
• Provide perspectives on culturally respective and inclusive strategies
• Increase awareness around barriers to inclusion; demonstrating constructive action in reducing barriers to the participation of IAL-centred programs and services
• Enhancing a cross-cultural understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders

Members:

Working Group members will be selected according to knowledge and relevant experience that supports Intergenerational growth and knowledge sharing among Indigenous communities. Through a collective vision, the IWG will support and promote Indigenous adult foundational learning initiatives through open dialogue and on-going networking opportunities that reflect and honour truth, healing, and reconciliation in the context of Indigenous adult literacy.
